University of Ottawa - Introduction to Business (ADM 1100)

This course, ADM 1100: Introduction to Business - introduces the fundamentals of business and management, focusing on how organizations function effectively in both domestic and global environments. Students will explore the manager's core responsibilities, including planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, and learn how these functions are applied to oversee human, financial, material, and commercial resources. Key topics include management principles, business strategy and structure, entrepreneurship, and the roles of various business disciplines such as human resources, operations, finance, accounting, and marketing. The course also emphasizes the development of essential skills like communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

By the end of this course, students will have a foundational understanding of management practices and their application in real-world organizations. They will gain insights into the manager’s role and how effective leadership and decision-making drive organizational success. Whether as future employees, colleagues, managers, entrepreneurs, or leaders, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to any business environment. Note: ADM 1100 and ADM 1300 cannot both be taken for credit. This course is open to Telfer School of Management certificate or microprogram students and students from other faculties but is not available for credit to Bachelor of Commerce students.
